Apple’s trojan horse is the “computer as appliance”. They’ve managed to create devices that are almost as wide in scope and functionality as general computing devices but are easily accessible to non-technical people. And, more importantly, don’t need technical maintenance or an understanding of the computing underpinnings.
If it were just the App store, [...]

Steve Jobs holds forth at Apple town hall
January 31st, 2010 · View Comments · Mac
Steve Jobs held an internal town hall at Apple after the unveiling of the iPad. Since secrecy is so tight, many at Apple had no idea the iPad was coming. He took questions and second-hand commenters say he had a few choice comments.
He said that Apple bought Lala because they wanted their talent [...]
Will the next iPhone OS allow multitasking?
January 19th, 2010 · View Comments · iPhone
It’s not the hardware. And it’s not a fundamental software issue. It’s a combination of UI and trust.
From the UI perspective, Apple didn’t want multiple apps running at the same time without visual feedback. So the few apps that they allow, all provide it. A background phone call shows as a [...]

What people want in iPhone OS 4.0
January 11th, 2010 · View Comments · iPhone
TUAW solicited email requests from its readers asking for what they wanted to see in OS 4.0. Excluding changes to the built-in apps (that’s coming in a later article), this is what people asked for, along with my own comments.
1. The lock screen needs to change.
Absolutely agreed. I want better handling of notifications. [...]
The Google Phone
December 17th, 2009 · View Comments · iPhone
There’ve been reports lately about the new Nexus One phone from Google. It appears to be a phone directly controlled by Google. Past Android phones have been produced in the traditional way, by having hardware vendors create the phones and then sell them to mobile operators. Google appears to be taking the [...]

What’s in the new AT&T carrier settings (ATT_US.ipcc) file?
The ATT_US.ipcc file is a zip file containing a ATT_US.bundle (identifier com.apple.ATT_US). It contains configuration information for AT&T’s US service and is provided by Apple to configure internal settings on the iPhone. It’s how the iPhone is customized for a given carrier. The AT&T file has [...]
State of the iPhone

In case you didn’t follow the Apple earnings call last night (which I’m ashamed to say I did), you might have missed the news (reported everywhere) that Apple just had their best second quarter in their history. That’s in the midst of a horrible recession. Everything was roses for Apple in all but one category [...]
iPhone OS 3.0 Town Hall Announcement
March 17th, 2009 · View Comments · iPhone
The iPhone OS 3.0 release is a huge jump for Apple. They’ve thrown a ton of updates into this one release and most of the pain points have been addressed.
Apple had their iPhone OS 3.0 announcement today. Quite a few changes with the platform, but first some interesting stats:
17,000,000 phones
13,000,000 iPod Touch [...]
iPhone Wish List
March 14th, 2009 · View Comments · iPhone
Given the pending iPhone OS 3.0 announcement on Tuesday I spent a few minutes putting together my personal wish list:
Universal inbox for email – this is the only thing that truly annoys me with the current design. I have both personal and corporate email on phone and have to constantly move between inboxes.
Better support for [...]

Android/iPhone Development Comparison
February 24th, 2009 · View Comments · iPhone
ArsTechnica has a very good (though high-level) look at developing for the Android phone. What interested me most was drawing comparisons.
Android
Google created their own implementation of Java (Dalvik). The only way to deploy an app on the phone is to code it in Java.
The Dalvik engine is slower then normal Java (it’s optimized [...]
